What are Cavities?

Dental caries is the term used to describe small holes on the teeth’s surface. Cavities are caused by bacteria that accumulate in the mouth and produce acid, which breaks down the enamel. Untreated cavities can lead to tooth decay, gum diseases, infections and even tooth loss.

Cavities

Cavities can be caused by several factors.

  • Bacteria is the main cause of tooth decay. It is found in every mouth. Bacteria feeds on sugar and starch found in food and produces acid. This can cause tooth decay.
  • Sugary drinks and foods: A diet rich in carbohydrates and sugar can increase your risk of developing cavities. Sugary drinks and candies can cause cavities by sticking to your teeth and feeding the bacteria that lives in your mouth.
  • Acidic drinks and foods: Acidic drinks and foods can also cause dental cavities. Acidic foods and drinks: Citrus fruits, carbonated beverages, and juices can all cause enamel to wear away, making it easier bacteria to cause decay.
  • Bad oral hygiene: Food particles that remain in the mouth can feed bacteria and cause cavities.

How To Prevent Cavities

A healthy diet and good oral hygiene are essential to preventing cavities.

  • Brush regularly and floss: Remove food particles and plaque between your teeth by brushing and flossing at least twice daily.
  • Limit your intake of acidic and sugary foods and beverages: If you must indulge in these foods, make sure to rinse your mouth afterward and brush your teeth.
  • Drink lots of water. Water helps to rinse away food particles and harmful bacteria, reducing your risk of developing cavities.
  • Fluoride toothpaste is a great way to protect your teeth from decay and strengthen the enamel.
  • Regular dental visits are important. You can detect and treat tooth decay before it becomes more serious.

Follow these steps to help keep your teeth healthy.
