Fever
A fever is one of the common symptoms of flu. It is an elevated body temperature (above 99degF). It is your immune system’s way of fighting an infection. Monitor your temperature when you’re sick and consult a doctor if it persists beyond a few days.
Coughing and sore throat
A cough and a sore throat are also primary symptoms of flu. Coughing is a reflex action that clears the airways from mucus and other foreign substances. Coughing can be productive or dry, and is often accompanied with a sore or painful throat. Drink more fluids if you are suffering from a sore throat and cough. Avoid irritants like tobacco smoke and pollution.
Stuffy or Runny Nose
Another common flu symptom is a runny or stuffy nasal passage. Runny noses are usually caused by excessive mucus, which is often caused by viral infections like the flu. Sneezing and itchy eyes can accompany a runny nose.
Inflammation and swelling in the nasal passages can cause a stuffy nose, which makes it difficult to breath through your nose. Avoid blowing your nostrils too hard and keep your nose moisturised.
Headache, Body Aches
The flu can also cause headaches and body aches. The aches and discomforts are caused or made worse by many factors such as stress, dehydration or sinus pressure. Rest and avoid any activities that could aggravate your symptoms if you suffer from a headache or body aches. Some over-the-counter medicines may provide relief.
Fatigue & Weakness
Flu symptoms include fatigue and weakness. Fighting an illness takes a lot energy. In addition to increased stress and sleep disturbances, illnesses can also lead to a decrease in physical activity.
Get plenty of rest if you are feeling tired and weak. Avoid activities that could aggravate your symptoms.
Nausea and Loss of Appetite
It is common to have digestive problems, including nausea and loss of appetite, when you are suffering from the flu. You should eat smaller, more frequent meals if you are feeling nauseated or have lost appetite.
Chest congestion and difficulty breathing
Flu symptoms include chest congestion and breathing difficulties. Chest congestion can cause a feeling like you have a lot of air in your chest. It may be due to inflammation or excessive mucus.
Difficulty Breathing is the feeling of being short of breath, or having difficulty inhaling and exhaling.
It is important to recognize that breathing problems can quickly turn into a medical crisis. Call for immediate medical attention if you or someone close to you is experiencing difficulty breathing.
